You may have seen media reports about a global security incident affecting the Canvas platform provided by Instructure. Canvas is used by educational institutions across the world.

The Queensland Department of Education uses Canvas for staff and student training. The department is communicating with Instructure as the provider and working closely with the Queensland Government Cyber Security Unit (QGCSU).

We have received repeated assurances from Instructure that staff and students’ financial information and passwords are not at risk.

In the meantime, families are encouraged to be extra vigilant when it comes to your eSafety. As always:

  • Be alert to phishing attempts – emails, text messages or phone calls may look legitimate. We would never ask for your password or sensitive personal information via email.
  • Avoid suspicious links and attachments – do not clink links or download files unless you are confident, they are from a trusted and verified source.
  • Students should monitor their accounts closely – check for any unusual activity, if you have concerns contact your school.
  • Limit sharing of personal information – especially if you are contacted unexpectedly or asked to verify details.

We recognise this incident may cause you some concern. Please know that the safety of your children is our highest priority.
