Junior Secondary is a purposeful transition phase that prepares students for the academic, social and personal demands of Senior schooling and life beyond school.
At Western Cape College, strong relationships underpin strong learning. In Years 7–9, we prioritise connection, belonging and high expectations so every student feels known, supported and capable of success.
Year 7 – Building Strong Foundations
Year 7 focuses on establishing essential learning habits, organisation skills and positive routines. Students are explicitly taught how to manage assessment, work collaboratively and engage confidently in their learning.
A strong emphasis is placed on literacy and numeracy, ensuring students develop the reading, writing and mathematical skills needed for success across all subject areas.
Years 8 and 9 – Growing Independence
In Years 8 and 9, students build on their foundations while developing greater independence, resilience and responsibility. They begin exploring future pathways and preparing for Senior subject selection.
Across Junior Secondary, students are supported to:
- Strengthen literacy and numeracy
- Develop critical and creative thinking
- Build organisation and study skills
- Grow social and emotional capability
- Set goals and explore future pathways
Our Junior Secondary program ensures students are academically prepared, socially confident and future-focused as they transition into Senior Secondary.
Assessment
At the beginning of each semester, students receive an assessment schedule outlining all assignments and examinations, including due dates and exam periods.
Exams are completed during regular class time. Students are expected to attend on the scheduled day unless exceptional circumstances apply.
Families are encouraged to review assessment schedules regularly to support organisation and successful task completion.
Please see our Year 7–10 Subject Guide for further information.
