Safe School Travel Committee

SafeST Committee

Purpose

Western Cape College is establishing a Safe School Travel (SafeST) Committee to strengthen the safety of students travelling to and from school across the Weipa and Mapoon campuses.

The Committee will bring together key local stakeholders to identify road safety risks, coordinate solutions, and develop a School Road Safety Action Plan that improves safety for students, families and the wider community.

Ensuring safe school travel is a shared responsibility requiring collaboration between schools, government agencies, local authorities and the community.

Scope of Work

The Committee will review and address matters including:

  • Pedestrian safety at crossings and key walking routes
  • Student behaviour and safe crossing practices
  • Bus loading zones and bus stop safety
  • Bicycle and scooter safety
  • Parent drop-off and pick-up procedures
  • Parking compliance and congestion
  • Traffic flow around school zones
  • Road safety education and communication with families
