Overview
At Western Cape College, students study the Australian Curriculum in three different key learning areas under the banner of Humanities. Students will study a semester of History and, in Years 8 and 9, a term each of Geography, Economics and Business and Civics and Citizenship.
In Year 10 we also offer a Humanities Extension course, which seeks to prepare students for the study of a senior Humanities subject in Years 11 and 12.
Year 10 Subject
Hybrid Humanities
Students explore the rich stories of Cape York and the Torres Strait and explore both the natural world and the deep cultural connections that have shaped it for thousands of years. Through fieldwork, research, and interactive projects, students learn about geographical processes through real-world examples while uncovering the interconnectedness of land, culture, history and geography.
Senior Secondary Subjects
In Senior Secondary, students can study the following subjects:
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Studies
Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Studies explores the history, cultures, and experiences of Australia's First Peoples, the world's oldest continuous cultures. Students develop an understanding of the diversity and richness of First Nations cultures and examine relationships between First Nations and non-First Nations Australians, past and present, to gain deeper insight into Australia's history and future.
Legal Studies
Legal Studies explores how laws shape society and protect individual rights while balancing responsibilities. Students learn how the legal system works and how it changes over time, helping them become informed citizens who can understand, question, and engage with legal issues.
