Wellbeing is a key foundation of life at Western Cape College Boarding. Our Wellbeing Pillar focuses on creating a safe, supportive and nurturing environment where students feel cared for, connected and empowered to succeed.
We recognise that student wellbeing is essential to learning, engagement and positive boarding experiences. Living away from home can bring both opportunities and challenges, and our wellbeing approach is designed to ensure students receive the support they need throughout their boarding journey.
Wellbeing support at boarding is proactive, relational and student focused. Our staff work closely with students to build trust, provide guidance and respond early to concerns before they escalate.
The Wellbeing Team works collaboratively with boarding staff, school staff, families and external services to support students across social, emotional, behavioural and mental health areas.
We believe wellbeing is everyone's responsibility, and all staff play an important role in creating a safe, supportive and connected environment for young people.

Year 7 and 8 Transition and Wellbeing Program
Transitioning into boarding and secondary school is a significant change for many young people and families.
Western Cape College Boarding delivers a dedicated Year 7 and 8 wellbeing program designed to support students through this important stage of development and transition. The program focuses on building strong relationships, emotional wellbeing, confidence and social connection while helping students adjust to routines, expectations and life away from home.
The program provides structured social and emotional learning opportunities that support students to:
- Build positive peer relationships and friendships
- Develop emotional regulation and resilience skills
- Strengthen communication and help-seeking skills
- Build confidence and independence
- Develop positive routines and coping strategies
- Feel safe, connected and supported within the boarding environment
Our staff work closely with students during these early years to ensure they feel supported both academically and emotionally while building a strong foundation for long-term success at boarding.
Equine Therapy and Wellbeing Camps
As part of our wellbeing approach, students also have opportunities to participate in equine therapy and wellbeing camp experiences. These programs provide students with opportunities to step away from everyday pressures, connect with others and engage in therapeutic and reflective experiences in a calm and supportive environment.
Working with horses can support emotional wellbeing, self-regulation and confidence building in a unique and meaningful way. Equine therapy programs help students develop:
- Emotional awareness and regulation
- Trust and relationship building skills
- Confidence and self-esteem
- Resilience and problem-solving skills
- Communication and teamwork skills
- Stress reduction and emotional calmness
Wellbeing camps also provide opportunities for students to strengthen peer relationships, build independence and engage in activities that support personal growth and positive wellbeing outcomes. These experiences are particularly valuable for students who may be experiencing challenges with transition, emotional wellbeing, engagement or connection.
A Holistic Approach to Wellbeing
Our wellbeing model focuses on supporting the whole student. This includes supporting:
- Emotional wellbeing
- Mental health
- Physical health
- Social connection
- Cultural identity
- Behaviour and self-regulation
- Confidence and resilience
- School engagement and participation
Students are encouraged to seek support when needed and to develop the skills required to manage challenges, build positive relationships and maintain healthy routines.
Partnerships and Health Support
Strong partnerships are essential in supporting student wellbeing. Our staff work closely with parents, carers, schools, health services and community supports to ensure students receive coordinated and consistent care. Western Cape College Boarding also provides access to health and wellbeing supports including visiting services, wellbeing programs and referral pathways where required.
GP Clinic on Campus: As part of our commitment to student health and wellbeing, a dedicated GP Clinic operates from the boarding campus two days per week. The clinic provides students with access to an onsite doctor and nurse who support a range of student health and wellbeing needs.
Having health services located within boarding improves accessibility for students and allows for early intervention, ongoing health monitoring and coordinated support between health professionals, boarding staff and families. The clinic supports students across physical health, general medical care, health education and wellbeing support while helping minimise barriers to accessing healthcare for young people living away from home.
