Culture Pillar

Western Cape College Boarding

Culture is at the heart of Western Cape College Boarding. Our Culture Pillar focuses on creating a culturally safe, respectful and inclusive boarding environment where students feel proud of who they are, where they come from and the communities they represent.

Western Cape College Boarding proudly supports students from communities across Cape York and the Torres Strait. We recognise the importance of culture, identity, connection and belonging in supporting student wellbeing, engagement and success while living away from home.

Our boarding environment values and celebrates Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures through daily practice, relationships, activities and opportunities for students to engage with culture in meaningful ways.

We understand that for many young people, boarding can involve being away from family, community, language and Country for extended periods of time. Our role is to ensure students maintain strong cultural connections while building confidence and belonging within the boarding community.

The Culture Team works alongside students, families, communities, Elders and boarding staff to strengthen cultural identity, create culturally safe spaces and embed First Nations perspectives throughout boarding life.

Building Connection and Belonging

Strong relationships and a sense of belonging are central to our boarding model.

Students are encouraged to build positive peer relationships, support one another and contribute positively to the boarding community. We aim to create an environment where students feel seen, heard, respected and valued.

The boarding campus brings together young people from communities across Cape York and the Torres Strait, creating opportunities for cross-cultural learning, shared experiences and deeper understanding between students from different cultural backgrounds. Through these connections, students strengthen pride in identity, build respect for others and develop lifelong friendships.

Dance Troupe and Cross-Cultural Learning

The Western Cape College Boarding Dance Troupe plays an important role in strengthening cultural identity, pride and connection within our boarding community.

The troupe provides students with opportunities to learn, practise and showcase both Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander dance and cultural performance, while also creating spaces for storytelling, leadership and cultural exchange.

Dance is more than performance — it is a way for students to express identity, share stories and build confidence. Students work alongside cultural staff, community members and mentors to learn traditional and contemporary dance practices in a supportive and culturally safe environment.

Our dance troupe regularly performs at school, boarding and community events, celebrating the rich cultures represented across Cape York and the Torres Strait. These performances provide opportunities for students to proudly represent their communities while educating others through cultural sharing and performance.

Through participation in dance and cultural activities, students develop:

  • Pride in identity and community
  • Leadership and teamwork skills
  • Confidence and public performance skills
  • Stronger peer connections
  • Cultural knowledge and understanding
  • Respect for different cultural practices and traditions

The dance troupe also provides opportunities for students to travel and represent Western Cape College Boarding at events and performances outside of Weipa. These experiences provide students with opportunities to proudly represent their communities and showcase culture while building confidence, leadership and broader life experiences. Through these opportunities, students become ambassadors for their communities, culture and boarding campus while strengthening connection, belonging and cultural pride.

Experiences Beyond the Classroom

The Culture Pillar provides opportunities for students to engage in experiences that strengthen identity, confidence and connection. These experiences may include:

  • Traditional dance and performance
  • Cultural camps and community activities
  • Arts, music and creative workshops
  • Cooking and traditional food experiences
  • Cultural leadership and mentoring opportunities
